You only need a few programs to create your own NSMBw hacks. Here’s what’s currently available. Note that BRRES files are contained within ARC files, which act like ZIP files. These programs are are arranged into sections for general game hacking, wii applications, and game-specific tools.

Brawl Custom song Maker v1.5 | site | guide
Create custom music for NSMBw, Mario Kart, and any other game that uses brstrm files. Download VGMStream for a Winamp plugin to play brstm files & an audio decoder (or in_cube if that doesn’t work). Use Hamradio’s BRSAR Patcher to patch your BRSAR file and ensure custom tracks loop properly.
BrawlBox v0.63 | site
Created for Smash Bros. Brawl. View some elements of the BRRES files used by NSMBw. Create dummy texture files (brtex), and replace the textures within them.
BRRES Viewer v1.2 | thread
This program enables users to view contents inside uncompressed BRRES files. They include MDL0 files, TEX0 files, PLT0 files, and CHR0 files. Users can also preview the animation data that the CHR0 files contain.
FPK Unpacker source
Used to pack and unpack FPK files, like the ones found in Tatsunoko vs Capcom, Naruto CONR3, and SSBB.

SZS Modifier v2.5 | site
The main program to use when modding games. Edit ARC and BRRES files and the files contained within. Replace and export textures, edit the game text, and extract mdl0 (model) files. Created for Mario Kart Wii, but it also supports New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Super Mario Galaxy, Mario Sports Mix, and other games.
WiiScrubber 1.4 | site
Extract files from any Wii ISO. To extract everything at once, load the ISO, right-click ‘Partition:0′>’Unencrypted Partition’>’Extract’.

Riivolution v1.04 | site
Loads your hacks on-the-fly. Can be used as a homebrew application, launched with Bannerbomb or installed as a channel.
Waninkoko’s Savegame Extracter/Installer
Extract and install game save data (in .sav format). Works with Tanookki Savegame Editor.
WiiDump 1.5 | site
Dumps Wii ISOs from your Wii so SD or USB. Very, very fast. Can be lunched as a homebrew application or launched with Bannerbomb.

The most popular NSMBw program. Create and edit NSMBw levels. To edit existing levels, you need to either extract them from a NSMBw ISO or use Reggie! Dumper (see below). go HERE for levels submitted by the creative community.
Reggie! Dumper (wii application) site
Dump the files required for Reggie! from your NSMB disc. Runs on your Wii. Like Riivolution, can be launched as a homebrew application or launched with Bannerbomb.
Tanooki Save Editor 2.1 | site | guide
Edit your game save to get 99 lives, open all the levels, change powerups etc. Use Waninkoko’s Savegame Extracter/Installer to get your wii .sav file for NSMB. This prgram doesn’t work with data.bin save files. Click here for more info on save file hacking.
Wart v2.8 | site
Create and edit tilesets. Incredibly useful for making your own game based on the NSMBw engine. Apparently not as good as the ‘Puzzle’ editor though.
